Understanding Root Canal Therapy

28/11/2024

Root canal therapy is a dental procedure that often stirs anxiety among patients. Despite this, it is a common and safe treatment that could work to save a tooth otherwise requiring extraction.

Root canal therapy, as a procedure, involves the removal of infected or damaged tissue from inside the tooth, thus relieving pain and preventing further infection.

In the article below, we will cover all you need to know about root canal therapy, helping you to better understand this treatment option and how it works to save a damaged smile.

What is Root Canal Therapy?

Root canal therapy, also known as endodontic treatment, is performed when the soft tissue inside the root canal, known as the pulp, becomes inflamed or infected.

This can result from deep decay, repeated dental procedures on the tooth, or a crack or chip in the tooth. In some cases, an injury to a tooth can cause pulp damage even if the tooth has no visible chips or cracks.

Do you Need a Root Canal?

Signs that may suggest the need for root canal therapy include intense pain when chewing or biting, persistent sensitivity to hot or cold, and the presence of pimples on the gums.

You may also notice swelling, tenderness, or darkening of the gums, which can indicate underlying infection or deep decay. Additionally, a chipped or cracked tooth can expose the nerves and lead to pain, making root canal therapy a necessary treatment to save the tooth.

Undergoing Root Canal Therapy

Root canal treatment involves several steps that typically take place over a few appointments. After numbing the area to ensure comfort, the dentist will place a small protective sheet called a “dental dam” over the area to isolate the tooth and keep it clean and free of saliva during the procedure.

The dentist will then make an opening in the crown of the tooth to access the pulp chamber. Using small instruments, the infected or diseased pulp is removed, and the canals are carefully cleaned and shaped. The space is then filled with a biocompatible material, usually a rubber-like material called gutta-percha, and sealed.

In the final step, the tooth needs to be restored. Because a tooth that needs root canal therapy often has a large tooth filling or extensive decay, a crown or other restoration often needs to be placed on the tooth to protect it and restore it to full function.

Recovery from Root Canal Therapy

Recovery from a root canal is generally quick, with most patients resuming normal activities the next day. It’s normal to experience some sensitivity or discomfort in the days following the procedure, which can usually be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers.

Good dental hygiene practices, such as brushing, flossing, and regular check-ups, are important to maintain the restored tooth and overall oral health.

Benefits of Root Canal Treatment

The primary benefit of root canal therapy is that it saves the natural tooth, which can help preserve a more natural bite and appearance. Saving the natural tooth also avoids other treatments such as dental implants or bridges.

After treatment, the tooth can function like any other tooth, which means you can bite and chew without pain.

While the thought of a root canal may be daunting, understanding what the procedure involves and recognising its benefits can help alleviate any fears. It is a safe and effective way to save a tooth and restore oral health.
