Causes of Toothache
28/08/2020
Toothache is a very common problem; you are likely to have had toothache at least once in your life as it has so many different causes. When you experience sudden, sharp pain in a tooth or multiple teeth it can be worrying and very painful.
Toothache can sometimes come on suddenly with seemingly no cause but there is always an underlying problem.
Tooth Decay
Tooth decay and cavities are caused by poor dental health, where sugars erode the tooth and cause small holes that expose the nerve. Cavities often go undetected when patients haven’t been to the dentist in a long time and are only noticeable once a cavity is infected and causes pain. Tooth decay can be prevented by brushing your teeth at least twice a day, flossing every night and avoiding sugary foods and drinks.
Extreme Temperatures
If your teeth are prone to sensitivity, you should be cautious about drinking or eating anything that is very hot or very cold. Extreme temperatures can cause a very painful, sharp pain in your teeth. You should talk to your dentist about your sensitivity and make sure that you are using a toothpaste for sensitive teeth.
Enamel Damage
Teeth become sensitive when nerves are exposed and enamel is worn down over time. Enamel can be eroded by excessive consumption of acidic foods and drinks, as well as applying too much pressure when you are brushing your teeth. Once you have damaged your enamel, it doesn’t mend itself and you will experience stabbing pains in your gums when you eat hard food.
If you are in agony with tooth pain, you should book an emergency dental appointment with your dentist.
