Are You in Need of an Emergency Tooth Extraction?

19/03/2023

Do you suspect that you require an immediate tooth extraction but are unsure? Here is all the information you need to know about tooth extractions in an emergency.

When the doctor’s office is closed, there are few things more terrifying than wondering if you need emergency dental care – especially if dealing with a dental emergency.
There are several 24-hour medical facilities available, however, it is near impossible to find a dentist open at two in the morning.

If you find yourself in a difficult situation and are unsure as to whether you require emergency dental care, It’s time to arm yourself with knowledge rather than panic.
If you believe you require an immediate tooth extraction, follow these instructions.

How To Determine Whether It’s An Emergency

The following dental issues are not necessarily considered to be serious, and do not typically require emergency intervention:

  • Any missing bridges, crowns, or fillings. This does not warrant a health emergency, but you cause some discomfort until it’s replaced.

  • Fractured or broken teeth. However, if a cracked or fractured tooth is causing severe discomfort, treat the situation as an emergency and call your dentist.

  • Although a dull toothache may be mildly uncomfortable, it is not seriously harmful. Use an over-the-counter painkiller to ease your discomfort and lessen the swelling until you can be seen by your dentist.

  • While having food trapped between your teeth might be irritating, floss can typically help to remove it. In the event that it doesn’t, wait until your dentist’s office is open before calling them.

In cases of severe gum disease, or a broken tooth that is damaged beyond repair, emergency tooth extraction is recommended to treat the issue and relieve any pain.

What to Expect During an Emergency Dentist Appointment

When you get to the dentist’s office, they’ll want to examine your teeth to determine what’s wrong. To understand the situation better, your dentist may take x-rays. The next step they take is determined by the issue you’re having.

Your dentist will initially numb the region if you need an emergency tooth extraction so that you don’t experience any more pain. The tooth will then be removed.

After that, an antibiotic prescription will be supplied to you in order to prevent infection.

In order to ensure that you are recovering properly, your dentist will let you know if any additional work is required and then have you come back in a few days or a week.
